Why won’t God answer my prayers? Here is the Reason

Why won’t God answer my prayers?

Every Christian experiences this multiple times in their lives. It’s actually very common. The cliché is if we pray to God sincerely God will answer us. But if you are tuned into reality, you know that is not always the case. There are times when God is silent and seems to go on for many years without answering your prayer.  The false assumption is that God responds to our prayer because of our sincerity or because we are sincere, God will respond. Now that becomes a work of righteous and the Bible is clear that no one is righteous. You have often heard in church or through another Christian that “God will give you what you need, not what you want” or “God’s time to answer your prayers are not your time; God knows the right time”.  Although these may be correct, that isn’t always true in every situation. You may have heard in the Bible when Jesus was saying “Ask and it shall be given to you”  or “..I will do whatever you ask in my name”; “My father will give you whatever you ask in my name”.

But then there is silence on that matter and that prayer goes unanswered. We are then left wondering where’s God when we need him or “we must done something bad and our punishment is an unanswered prayer!” What some Christians fail to understand is that the Jesus’ promises were based on qualifications.  Dr. William Lane Craig enlightens us on that issue in his book “Hard Questions, Real Answers” on biblical possibilities on why our prayers could be unanswered.

1.  God cannot contradict Himself: We know that when two rival football teams, equal in faith, experience, and talent pray to God for Victory, only one will win and the other will lose. God cannot contradict prayers.

2.  We have to repent for our sins and come clean:

Psalm 66:18 says “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord will not have listened”

Proverbs 15:29 NIV, “The LORD is far from the wicked but he hears the prayer of the righteous.”

Unfortunately the Bible also says that no one is righteous and all have fallen short. But it is through the blood of Jesus, our faith in Him, and our repentance to Him that washes our unrighteous away.

The Bible says in (1 John 1:6-9 NIV), “If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. {7} But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. {8} If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. {9} If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Romans 4:5

However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness.

Romans 4:9

Is this blessedness only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? We have been saying that Abraham’s faith was credited to him as righteousness.

Genesis 15:6

Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

Bottom line: We must be right before God and come clean before He even accepts our prayers.

1 Peter 3:7

Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

In other words, we must be respectful to our spouses and neighbors because failing to do so can hinder your prayers!

3.  Wrong Motives- Too often are our prayers are motivated by selfishness such as “Dear God, please give me that car I always wanted”.

James tells us “When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures” (James 4:3)

Prayer that is totally self-centered does not fall under the promises of Jesus. We should request things that are of God and not only to satisfy our selfish desires.

4.  Lack of faith-

Mark 11:24 tells us “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

James 1:6-8 tells us “But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.”

A doubtful prayer will not be answered. Words without faith are words without meaning, its empty. We must pray in faith and bold confidence.

5.  Lack of earnestness.

You must be sincere when you pray.

6.  Lack of perseverance- Many times we will pray once or twice and that’s it. We just give up. Jesus talks about perseverance in his parables Luke 11:5-8 and Luke 18:1-8.  The point of the message is that if we want something bad we should preserve and never give up

7.  It must be according to God’s will and not your own will.

Romans 12:2 tells us, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.”

The only decision God does not want us to make is the decision to sin or resist His will.

“Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4).

You will know what God’s will is by asking Him, walking with Him by obeying his commandments, and doing things that will glorify Him.

1 John 3:21-22 (New International Version)

21Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him.

  1. Is this what you tell someone who has cancer? That they do not pray sincerely enough? That they are selfish and have the wrong motives? That they need to pray more often? That they deserve it??

What if they ask God what his will is, and they do not get an answer, as most of us don’t?

    • Would I tell them that if they had cancer? Of course not. My family has a history of cancer from chronic smoking. It was their will to smoke for 40 years plus to develop cancer so its common sense that cancer could develop. No one forced them to pick up that cigarette to smoke for all those years. Its like using your own will to jump over a cliff knowing the consequences and while you are in mid-air praying for God’s miracle. God’s not a magical genie who grants every single wish upon your command especially against your own will. Doesn’t make sense. Anyways, all I can do it comfort them and spend my time with them to make their last days as enjoyable, comfortable, and memorable.

  2. Nope, Not true at all God or whoever you think he is is a brat that will do as he will’s just because he has the higher tech over us at this time. as you can read in the bible ,every time man has started to become more like God , knowing more truth , God wipes us out and starts all over again, He could not even stop his own war in his holy place. Now if he is all knowing , how many times has he played this game of starting over and over again, we have history about our first earth age, proof that man did have a higher tech and if you read and search for it you will find it, also can he hear us, sure but read Danial it was a force holding back the angle. but then it comes right back to what i said , all he has is a higher tech on hs side, now God even let and allow people to own slaves, mmmmmmm think about that that, so its ok to own a slave and make a man less then a man in God’s eye. so let’s see here as long as you can take it and keep it God will not care. So with over 1.5 billion of people that have no food to eat and i more billion maybe get some food, then i billion maybe get one meal a day, where is God there? Let now address this, They pray for food and good water to drink, but never get it, you can tell me out of 2 or 3 billion people that one or two cant get it right with God, But then lets address the powers in place only 14 family rule over the earth, Oh yes all facts people look it up, yes he said seek and you will find, well what I found out was , take what you can and fight for what you have and then just like the church in the roman day, they made con-sessions to let everyone in, More pagan then anything else, lets see we worship or at least play with the x-mas tree, and then when a church has a Easter egg hunt, all pagan. Mix with the church, but its ok as long as you give to your church they will always take your money and maybe even take your wife or kids for their sick pervert fun and mind games. , this is the end time, The book of Enoch was never let ion the bible , but look it up and read it, tells a lot about what the church that is controlled by the 14 family don’t want you to know. why do you think in every old picture that a bishop was in the kings court. All about to control the people, Now back to why God will not pick up the pray and call you back, It all comes back to what this little God wants to do. if he likes you or not .. You have to take it and make it on your own, God is not here to help you in anyway shape or form. Why do you think we have thugs that make it big in the world and people look up to them, or its like a bootlegger in the 1930′s they made the money and when all said and done, they even put a president in office in the 1960′s, So look at history, and then Pray to God, but do not give your church any more of your hard earn money, give it to someone you know or too a homeless person that has not eat’en in days or weeks. at least you know the money is helping that person, Not for a preacher to fly around in his private jet with someone son or wife on their knees and not praying to God on that plane. Get a clue people, Work it out for yourself and then give to who you thinks needs it. Or if you want to get rich start your own church with all the write off’s now Maybe ask Jesus for a load, LOL Jesus only saves, lol he will not give a dime out, but tells you wait till you get to heaven, lol… and I will gladly pay you on Tuesdays for a hamburger today, So if it make you fel better ask and pray and maybe inside yourself it make you feel better, then do it. However I for one have stopped and my life had turned out for the better, I learned that asking and never getting from God is not a bad thing at all depend on yourself and do good when you want, and hold on to your own money and tell, the preacher and the pope to get a life. it is the end times and the church you think is great will hack your head off if you do not fall into line, again going back to the war in heaven, when he come downs with his high tach, people will bow down, and the first one is the fallen one, LOL people wake up. they want us to be pawns for the game they play… good luck and maybe Some other God will bless you, Or take it yourself whatever it takes..

  3. Well, that is so comforting. I’m not righteous, I’m still sinful, that’s why God has not answered my prayers. I don’t have enough “faith” or “perseverance, or my motives are bad, or maybe … it’s a multigenerational curse? No, wait. I thought God did away with that in the Torah. He didn’t? No? You mean, wait, God can change His MIND? Or, maybe he just really hates me. Is it because I just listened to Ornette Coleman? Naw, that’s 1950s jazz, that’s not even considered “radical” by Bible-believing Christians anymore. What could it be? I deserve it. That’s it, I deserve to suffer. I go for wisdom to Job. Great wisdom there. God is too big for me to understand. So, suck it up and don’t complain. Be like Calvin. Be like the Puritans. Be like, like a 2nd century Roman martyr, or like Paul, or Steven. The lack of logic, the lack of cognitive dissonance, it’s astounding. It’s enough to … drive a whole economic system to the ground. No, wait. That’s happening because we’ve turned our back on God. I know that I’ve become gay since homosexual marriage was legalized in several states. What else? Home abortions are a favorite hobby. I’ve got a chubby for Karl Marx and I’m flirting with that other religion, over there, that wrong one.

  5. You contradict yourself more than the bible contradicts itself.. God does what he wants, period.. The good get punished with the evil. Millions of corrupt people go unpunished their entire lives, and I’m supposed to live rightiously on the premise of faith alone? I try to be a good person as much as possible, yet the mindless, selfish world around me seems much more rewarding. What if there is no reward and I’m waisting my life? The bible, Koran, Torrah etc. are all more confusing than life itself.. Were we created to live in confusion? ..Guess death will answer that. And there’s no second chance…Now that’s justice.

  6. I have gone through a period of 15 years where circumstances have caused me to lose everything. I prayed all along the way and sometimes did receive a reprieve for a while. I have stayed in prayer all these years praying that His will for me be done and still my circumstances are quite threatening to the point that I have prayed for him to take me as I can’t stand it anymore. Yet, as I enter another year where my ability to sustain myself is uncertain, this time as much if not more than before, I know that to my Father my circumstances here are not so much of importance as the conditioning of my soul. I know I have grown in understanding, even if I don’t understand it completely and know that I never will. My life is in His hands and my fate under His dictates. Is all for me gaining entrance into the Gates of Heaven a select place at His table? I don’t know and all the Bible verses and psalms together will never answer this for me. What I do know if my love for HIm will never fail though I may fail (and do) in according to His precepts in my daily life, my heart remains with Him despite my often failings. Life is a journey to learn to live according His ways in all we do adding to His glory so that mankind may be elevated one soul at a time. If you know His love then you know that nothing we do can make us deserving of such powerful love. In allowing us to transform ourselves through challenges, He also shows His love. Without these challenges, we could never become closer to Him.
